Profile of a refraction tomography that shows the seismic velocities in the subsurface.
Map of the thickness of the loose rock layer. The background shading shows the interpolation from the seismic refraction tomography, and the colored points indicate the bedrock depth determination using passive seismics HVSR measurements.

Client

Municipality of Scuol

Office of Forestry and Natural Hazards, Canton of Graubünden

Engineering Office

WNT Ingenieure GmbH

Services Provided

  • Seismic survey with 7 active seismic profiles and 47 passive seismic point measurements.
  • Passive seismic mapping (vibrometry) for identifying additional potentially unstable slope areas and determining depth structure.
  • Seismic refraction tomography for lateral determination of the thickness of the loose material zones.

Project Description

Several landslides have been identified along a road in the municipality of Scuol, resulting in significant repair costs. To support the geotechnical assessment and the planning of measures to remediate the landslides, Spektrum Geophysik AG conducted a seismic survey on behalf of the municipality of Scuol and in collaboration with WNT Ingenieure GmbH.

To this end, potential landslide areas and their subsurface structure were examined in detail using refraction seismics and seismic vibrometry. The measurements identified several areas with a highly loosened layer extending to depths of approximately 40 meters. The results provide a reliable quantitative basis for spatially delineating landslide risks and support the planning of further remediation measures.
